Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, diseases, and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. Dr Lee is also trained in the planning and placement of dental implants. To become a periodontist in Australia, an additional 3-year specialist training is required at a recognised institution after becoming a dentist.

Surgical procedures of the mouth

Oral Surgery involves the surgical procedures of the mouth and peri-oral region. The most common procedure is removal of infected or impacted teeth such as wisdom teeth. Oral Surgeons are adept at managing medically compromised patients who require surgery in their mouths. Their skillset extends to patients who require investigation of soft and hard tissue pathologies who may require biopsy or further management.

Oral surgeons assist other dental specialities for comprehensive treatment plans including pre-prosthetic surgery, surgical orthodontics and surgical endodontics, as well as the the placement of dental implants, and associated procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifts.

Oral surgeons are also trained to help manage patients with chronic pain disorders of the oro-facial region such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, neuralgias or burning mouth syndrome, to name a few.
